How do you free up deleted disc space

I just noticed that using filezilla to delete unneeded iso files does not add to the usable disc space. Is there some sort of command level defrag or something that free's up space?

Its empty.
I just deleted 12gb worth of movies and only 1gb freed up. I deleted the files from filezilla

Try this

df -h
dd if=/dev/zero of=10gb bs=1M count=10240
sync
df -h
rm -f 10gb
sync
df -h

If the expected doesn't happen something very strange is going on.

Kind of. How do I check

I am using df

The file manager in KDE says after I deleted 3 movies that I only have 1gb free. I deleted 12gb of movies.

Now I just deleted another movie in file manager and it says moving file to trash:/The Eye.iso but nothing seems to be happening.

Ok the file finished deleting and still only shows 1gb free. That is 17gb I have deleted.
