Boot Failure after install

For some reason it refuses to boot up, I get a</p>\n<p>\"Boot failure insert proper media device and press enter or reboot\"</p>\n<p>The jumpers on the hard drive(a Hitachi Deskstar 80gb) are set as Master and my boot devices are in this order:</p>\n<p>IDE HD 1<br />\nIDE HD 2<br />\nIDE HD 3<br />\nIDE HD 4</p>\n<p>I dont have 4 hard drives obviously, but i set it like this in the hope that it would scan through and mabe find my install. The install goes fine, but then wont boot from the hard drive afterwards. I have tried moving the jumpers around into all available settings but still it makes no difference. I believe it is a hardware fault because of the fact the hard drive works in my other pc. You get that everytime you reboot with that HD in that perticular computer? Something is definately not right then? The auto install reformats the entire HD so you don\'t have to do anything. Now if it just booted and you got a black screen or some jumbled image, then I would say you said yes to the proprietary drivers which doesn\'t support your card and you will have to change video drivers. I just finished installing Mythdora, the install went without a hitch and after a short time i was shown the successful install screen and hit reboot. For some reason it refuses to boot up, I get a

"Boot failure insert proper media device and press enter or reboot"

The jumpers on the hard drive(a Hitachi Deskstar 80gb) are set as Master and my boot devices are in this order:

IDE HD 1
IDE HD 2
IDE HD 3
IDE HD 4

I dont have 4 hard drives obviously, but i set it like this in the hope that it would scan through and mabe find my install. With no joy.

Any ideas here?

If this is just one drive

If this is just one drive your using and you want to use the entire drive, why don't you just do an Auto install. But if you do have other drives in the box, that you don't want to format, then I would recommend disconecting them if you plan on an Auto install.

First I would go into your bios on boot up, press f1 / esc /del / f2 depending on your mother board, auto detect the hard drive as this will tell you what channel your hard drive is on (are you using Sata drives?) if it detects on slave move the jumpers to master or set the ide cable to the end of the cable to that has two connectors.

It would be wise to leave your boot order to:

cdrom / hd0 / none

If you have any usb card readers in your system remove them as well.

Next run the auto install with a crt monitor attached, if all goes well and the system fails to boot then I would say its the MBR on the hard drive failing to record lilo (boot loader) install.

If you have a spare hard drive of more than 8gb try it on that just for fun.

One more possible thing is that the ide channel 0 is the problem on master, on the motherboard you may have second channel fit the drive on that as it may work.
