I have a issue that just started. My sound will cut out and the programs will record without the sound. The old recording work fine with sound. When the sound cuts out, all NEW recordings will not have sound. It is weird.
Utahnetman

I don't know if this helps.
I don't know if this helps.
http://www.thebluesmokeband.com/fc3.sound.php
I also discovered that sound goes away after reboot. I need to run alsaconf to have sound return.
Then I have to run alsa mixer to either raise master volume or un-mute it. Or a combination of both....
Looking in to issue. Will post when I find fix.
/finished looking
Ok I looked in my mesage log and found this.
snd_page_alloc: no version for "struct_module" found: kernel tainted.
When I did a google and found it could be the version of ALSA.
Going to update alsa on my Myth server and let you know if it works.
/Looking some more on 11/18/2005
I found this web page.
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/asoundrc.php?module=Generic
What pikes my intrest is this part.
The asoundrc file is typically installed in a user's home directory
$HOME/.asoundrc
and is called from
/usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf
It is also possible to install a system wide configuration file as
/etc/asound.conf
Well $home/MythTv dosent have it.
And /etc/asound.conf dosen't exist.
The config file in /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf says this.
#
# ALSA library configuration file
#
# pre-load the configuration files
@hooks [
{
func load
files [
"/etc/asound.conf"
"~/.asoundrc"
]
errors false
}
]
I also found this.
http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-7.html#ss7.1
I se the following via command line.
$ amixer set Master,0 100%,100% unmute
$ amixer set PCM,0 100%,100% unmute
$ amixer set Line,0 75%,75% mute captur
$ amixer set Capture,0 100%,100% captur
$ su
# alsactl store
# exit
Then I rebooted my MythTv Server. Still no sound.
I am a NEWBEE in linux so if I am wrong please forgive me.
Their is no .conf file for ALSA to read from?
Could that prevent sound from initilazing on start up?
Where would I put the command line configs so upon eboot itwould work?
Buddy in Houston, Tx
I can't add or help, just add my request...
I am having the exact same problem. I lose all sound on reboot, and must run alsaconf to get it back. If anyone comes up with a solution, please post it here...

I tried it, but...
This link lists as having no volume upon rebooting. In my case, it's like the sound card never existed- but in the interest of finding a solution, I tried this...
To no effect. The only way to get my sound back is to drop to xterm, run alsaconf and let it modify my modprobe.conf.
Once I do this, it works fine.
Anyone have any other thoughts?
On a tanget, what a great thing MythDora is!!!!! I've been struggling with Jarrod's guide since RH9, with limited success.
MythDora fired right up with only minor issues (like this soundcard issue). This app has taken me farther in 1 week, than Jerrod's Guide in, well, a long time! I don't want to belitte Jarrod or his guide (I have learned TONS from using it) but if I found MythDora 3 versions of Fedora ago, I would have saved myself a lot of headaches...
Thanks for making a great app!!!!!!!

This is strange. Is your modprobe.conf file different when sound is working? If so, post the two, working and not working. What sound card are you using? Is this a built-in card? If so what motherboard?
Oh and thanks for the kind words :-) !!

OK, I'm officially confused...
I had to reboot today, so I looked at modprobe after rebooting (getting no sound) "Error opening audio device (/dev/dsp), the error was no such file or directory" is the error actually reported when I try something in Myth with sound, say Watch TV.
There is no difference between the modprobe.conf when sound doesn't work, and when it does....
Next reboot I may see if /dev/dsp actually doesn't exist like the error reports... Maybe alsaconf is creating this when I run it? But that doesn't explain the fact it disappears on reboot....
More to follow, and advice is always welcome!!!

More info on missing sound card
I'm beginning to think my problem is not related to modprobe.conf and that the error message:
"Error opening audio device (/dev/dsp), the error was no such file or directory"
is really correct, when The Wife accidently rebooted the machine, I checked to see if such a thing as /dev/dsp existed. It did not. Once I ran alsaconf, it appeared.
So rebooting erases/removes /dev/dsp.... Wierd.
Any thoughts folks???
TIA!!

This sounds like an issue discussed in the Fedora Myth(TV)ology HOWTO. I had a problem where my audio settings didn't "stick" after a reboot. I would have to open alsamixer and adjust the PCM setting everytime. But, that was when I was using MythTV and a full distribution of FC3.
Anyway, check out this link: http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/fc3myth.php#alsa
Also, here is a workaround (not exactly a fix) for restoring sound settings after a reboot: http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/fc3myth.php#auto
Good luck.

Just tried...
Sorry, I've been traveling for work recently- trying to get it all done by the Holidays...
I have added:
'/usr/sbin/alsactl restore 0'
to my rc.local file and have rebooted. Same problem. I read somewhere else here to try store instead of restore- that will be my next try.
It works fine, just when the system reboots- which isn't much. This may be a fluke I deal with on a case by case basis. But I'm not giving up yet!
Thx!
