i am experiencing a chop in live tv video using bitrate/maxbitrate 2500/9800. audio at layer2 48k, 256kbps. i played with hdparm:

running "hdparm -tT /dev/hda" gives me:

caching reads: 248 MB/s
buffered disk reads: 22.79 MB/s

i shouldve said that i already had those changes in place. also, with "deinterlace playback" *unchecked* i get worse, grainy/liney video. so i keep it checked.
